The Bielski Partisans Rescue Mission
Tuvia Bielski was a remarkable Polish-Jewish resistance leader who founded and commanded the Bielski partisans in the forests of western Belarus. Rejecting the notion of passive endurance, Bielski prioritized saving Jewish lives alongside armed combat against the Nazis and their collaborators. Under his resolute leadership, the partisan camp evolved into a thriving forest community known as "Jerusalem in the woods," sheltering women, children, and the elderly. At its peak, the group protected and sustained over 1,200 Jews, making it one of the most successful and compassionate rescue missions of World War II.
