Heinrich Schütz: German Master
Heinrich Schütz
A leading German composer and organist of the 17th century. Active mainly in Dresden as the court Kapellmeister for the Elector of Saxony, he integrated the musical techniques he studied under Giovanni Gabrieli in Italy into German Lutheran church music. A crucial figure who drove the transition from Renaissance music to early Baroque music, he is considered one of the most prominent German composers prior to Johann Sebastian Bach. More than 500 of his works survive today, and including lost compositions, he wrote a vast amount of sacred and secular music. He also composed *Dafne*, considered to be one of the earliest German operas, though the score has not survived.
