The Qing Dynasty Court
Faced with imperialist pressures following the First Opium War, the Qing dynasty court entered a pivotal era of survival and transformation. Centered in the Forbidden City and the Old Summer Palace, court politics swung between anti-foreign resistance and diplomatic opening, fueling military modernization through the Self-Strengthening Movement. However, persistent internal conflicts between conservatives and reformers hindered systemic change. Shattered by events like the Boxer Uprising and foreign occupations, the court's prestige eroded, and late-era structural reforms failed to stem the tide. Ultimately, the Qing court collapsed under the 1911 Xinhai Revolution as foreign imperialism reshaped East Asia.
