Guangxu Emperor
Selected as emperor by Cixi as a child, the Guangxu Emperor assumed personal rule amidst growing national humiliation following the First Sino-Japanese War. Seeking to save the empire, he embraced radical reformers like Kang Youwei and launched the 1898 Hundred Days' Reform to overhaul education, administration, and the military. However, his bold attempt to establish a constitutional state provoked a fierce conservative backlash led by Cixi. The resulting Wuxu Coup halted all reforms, executed key leaders, and placed the emperor under permanent confinement until his suspicious death in 1908, symbolizing the tragic frustration of Qing reform.
