Winfield Scott was one of the most prominent military figures in American history, serving as Commanding General of the U.S. Army for two decades. Renowned for his tactical brilliance in the Mexican-American War, he led the decisive amphibious campaign from Veracruz to Mexico City. Scott ran as the Whig presidential candidate in 1852 and later devised the Union's overarching "Anaconda Plan" strategy at the onset of the American Civil War despite his advanced age.
