Mercator and Modern Map Projection

Born on March 5, 1512, in Rupelmonde, Belgium, Gerard de Kremer (Mercator) was a pioneering cartographer, geographer, and mathematician. He is best known for creating the Mercator projection in 1569, a revolutionary map projection that represented lines of constant course as straight lines, dramatically improving nautical navigation. His influential work, including producing numerous globes and maps, also popularized the term "Atlas" for collection of maps.
