Filippo Bruno
Born in early 1548 in Nola, Italy, Filippo (Giordano) Bruno was a visionary philosopher, mathematician, and cosmological theorist. Expanding upon Copernicus's heliocentrism, he boldly proposed that the universe is infinite, containing countless other inhabited planetary systems orbiting distant suns. His radical philosophical ideas and refusal to recant his theological views led to his trial by the Roman Inquisition and execution at the stake in 1600.
