Thomas Best
Thomas Best was an English naval commander whose victory at the Battle of Swally in 1612 shattered the Portuguese naval supremacy off the coast of India. By defeating a superior Portuguese fleet, Best impressed the Mughal court, paving the way for English traders to secure official imperial firomans to establish factories in Surat. In his later years, he served in the Royal Navy, engaging in anti-piracy operations and naval expeditions across Europe.
