Job Charnock
Job Charnock was an East India Company administrator in 17th-century Bengal who oversaw key factories in Patna, Kasimbazar, and Hooghly. During conflicts with the Mughal Empire, he strategically relocated company operations to Sutanuti in 1690, establishing the fortified trading headquarters that evolved into the city of Calcutta (Kolkata). Though modern scholarship debates his sole title as founder, Charnock played a decisive role in cementing British commercial dominance in Bengal.
