Elizabeth Buffum Chace’s Activism

Elizabeth Buffum Chace was a 19th-century American abolitionist and women's rights activist who spearheaded the anti-slavery movement centered in Rhode Island. Based on her Quaker beliefs, she actively participated in supporting fugitive slaves and the activities of anti-slavery societies. She also dedicated herself to expanding women's suffrage and social rights, and is evaluated as a central figure in reform movements within the local community.
