Francis Lightfoot Lee

Francis Lightfoot Lee was born into the prominent Lee family of Virginia and was a politician who, along with his older brother Richard Henry Lee, supported the American Independence movement. He engaged in opposition activities against the Stamp Act and the Coercive Acts in the Virginia House of Burgesses. As a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, he signed both the United States Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. In contrast to his eloquent brother, he contributed significantly to colonial unity and the achievement of independence from a practical perspective through behind-the-scenes coordination and committee work.
