In February 1945, Allied leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin met at the Yalta Conference in Crimea to coordinate the final defeat of Nazi Germany and plan the postwar reorganization of Europe. They agreed on the unconditional surrender and occupation zones of Germany, the formation of the United Nations, and Soviet entry into the Pacific war. While aiming to secure peace, the agreements established spheres of influence that set the stage for the Cold War.
