Janusz Korczak and Orphanage Care
Henryk Goldszmit, widely known by his pen name Janusz Korczak, was a pioneering Polish-Jewish pediatrician, author, and children's educator. He dedicated his life to advocating for children's rights, operating a progressive Jewish orphanage in Warsaw that emphasized child self-governance. During World War II, despite facing immense danger inside the Warsaw Ghetto, Korczak steadfastly refused multiple offers of rescue and safe passage. In August 1942, he chose to accompany the children under his care during their forced deportation to the Treblinka extermination camp, becoming an immortal symbol of moral integrity and unwavering devotion to youth.
