Václav Havel
Born in Prague in 1936, Václav Havel was a leading Czechoslovak playwright, prominent dissident, and the moral voice of the anti-communist resistance. Subjected to continuous harassment and prolonged imprisonment for his relentless human rights activism, he co-authored the foundational Charter 77 manifesto. Havel's unwavering commitment to non-violent resistance culminated in his leadership of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which successfully dismantled the communist regime. He subsequently served as the first president of a free Czech Republic, guiding the nation's successful democratic transition.
