Siegfried Sassoon’s Anti-War Protest
Siegfried Sassoon was a decorated British officer and war poet whose bravery on the Western Front earned him the Military Cross. Disturbed by the prolonged slaughter and military leadership, Sassoon channeled his outrage into fierce, satirical poetry that exposed the grim horrors of trench life and the ignorance of the civilian home front. In 1917, he famously published his public protest "Finished with the War: A Soldier's Declaration," directly challenging the government's war aims. Sent to Craiglockhart Military Hospital instead of facing court-martial, he mentored Wilfred Owen, leaving an indelible mark on war literature before later writing acclaimed autobiographical memoirs.
