Emperors of Austria-Hungary
The Emperors of Austria-Hungary during World War I oversaw a sprawling multinational empire during its final turbulent years. Franz Joseph I launched the empire into conflict in 1914 following the assassination of his nephew, maintaining traditional authority while struggling to keep internal ethnic factions unified. Upon his death in 1916, Charles I succeeded him and immediately sought path to peace through secret diplomatic channels like the Sixtus Affair. Facing military strain, food shortages, and rising nationalist movements, Charles attempted federal reforms to save the realm. However, his efforts failed to prevent total collapse, leading to the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918.
