Elbridge Gerry: Constitutional Founding, Rights Advocacy, and Diplomacy

Elbridge Gerry (1744–1814) was a statesman active from the American independence period and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Following the American Revolutionary War, he participated in federal politics and was involved in the Constitutional Convention. He later served as the 5th Vice President. Due to his creation of unnaturally shaped electoral districts, his name became known as the origin of the word gerrymander. He played a crucial role in early American politics.
