John Paul Jones: Naval Heroism and Revolutionary Maritime Command

John Paul Jones (1747–1792) was born in Scotland, moved to America, and distinguished himself as a naval commander in the American Revolutionary War. Employing bold tactics in naval battles against the British Royal Navy, he is famous for the words "I have not yet begun to fight." Because he supported the creation of the United States Navy during its foundational period, he is referred to as the "Father of the U.S. Navy." After the war, he served in Europe as a diplomatic and military advisor, becoming an iconic figure of the modern U.S. Navy.
