Tragic assassination of Archduke’s wife Sophie
Sophie Chotek was a Bohemian noblewoman who became the wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Because of rank differences, their marriage was morganatic, resulting in her receiving the title Duchess of Hohenberg while being denied royal privileges and court precedence. Despite these social restrictions, she remained a dedicated partner and mother to their three children. On June 28, 1914, during an official visit to Sarajevo, she was shot alongside her husband by Gavrilo Princip. Her death, alongside the Archduke's, generated immediate international shockwaves and served as the direct catalyst for the July Crisis, ultimately leading European powers into World War I.
