Bonar Law’s Conservative War Coalition
Andrew Bonar Law played a pivotal role as Leader of the Conservative Party during World War I. Recognizing the need for national unity, he agreed to join H. H. Asquith's coalition government in 1915 as Colonial Secretary. In December 1916, Law was instrumental in the political transition that brought David Lloyd George to power, forming a dynamic partnership as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons. Law effectively managed wartime finances, raised crucial war loans, and maintained Conservative support for the war effort, establishing the groundwork for his own eventual premiership in 1922.
