Josef Smrkovský: Prague Spring Reformer
Born in Velenka in 1911, Josef Smrkovský was a leading communist reformer and key figure during the 1968 Prague Spring. As Chairman of the National Assembly, he passionately championed political liberalization, freedom of speech, and the dismantling of rigid bureaucratic controls, winning widespread popularity among the public. Following the August 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion, Smrkovský became a prime target for Soviet ire and conservative hardliners. He was systematically stripped of his political influence and powerful official positions during the subsequent "normalization" era, fading into political obscurity.
