Declaration of Independence

Adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence officially severed political ties between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it proclaimed fundamental human rights and established the United States as a sovereign nation.
