An African American political scientist and diplomat who earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and made immense contributions during the founding era of the United Nations. During the First Arab-Israeli War in the late 1940s, he served as a UN mediator and negotiated a seemingly impossible joint armistice agreement, making him the first Black person and person of color in the world to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. Amid Cold War U.S.-Soviet tensions, he created the framework for UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO). Domestically, he also vigorously supported the Civil Rights Movement—a giant of intellect and mediation.
