Father of Soviet Containment Policy

A leading modern diplomat and historian whose essay written under the pseudonym "Mr. X" and "Long Telegram" defined America's core Cold War strategy of "containment" against the Soviet Union. Educated at Princeton University and elsewhere, he acutely analyzed Soviet expansionism based on his postings in Moscow. However, when policies leaned toward military intervention (such as the Vietnam War) contrary to his intentions, he fiercely criticized the government's overreaction. Valuing political and economic deterrence over military force, he was the greatest intellect of Cold War diplomacy.
