King Taejong and Centralization of Power
King Taejong, the third monarch of Joseon, played a pivotal role in establishing a powerful centralized government. After securing dominance through royal succession struggles, he abolished private armies held by nobles, centralizing military force under the state. Taejong reformed land taxation, improved state finances, and secured official tributary recognition from Ming China in 1401. By purging political opponents and strengthening royal authority, he built a solid institutional foundation that enabled the prosperous reign of his son, King Sejong.
