Wilhelm Liebknecht: Architect of Mass Social Democracy
Wilhelm Liebknecht, born on March 29, 1826, in Giessen, Germany, was a prominent social democratic politician and journalist. After participating in the Revolutions of 1848, he lived in exile in London, developing close ties with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. In 1869, alongside August Bebel, he co-founded the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP), which later merged to form the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Liebknecht spearheaded party opposition to the Franco-Prussian War and endured imprisonment for his anti-war stances. As long-time editor of Vorwärts, he built a disciplined, mass-based Marxist parliamentary party.
