Jan Baptist van Helmont’s Gas Research
Jan Baptist van Helmont was a Flemish physician, chemist, and natural philosopher from Brussels who bridged alchemy and modern chemistry. Influenced by Paracelsus, he placed heavy emphasis on quantitative experimentation to understand physiological and chemical processes. Helmont is famous for recognizing air-like vapors as distinct chemical substances and coining the scientific term "gas" from the Greek word chaos. His famous five-year willow tree experiment demonstrated plant nutrition through water rather than soil alone. Through his detailed investigations into carbon dioxide, digestion, and respiration, Helmont made seminal contributions to plant physiology and the founding of pneumatic chemistry.
