Discovering the Microscopic Universe
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch tradesman and self-taught scientist from Delft who became known as the father of microbiology. Using custom-built, high-precision single-lens microscopes of his own design, he was the first human to observe and document microscopic life, including bacteria, protozoa, spermatozoa, and red blood cells. By communicating his detailed discoveries to the Royal Society of London, Leeuwenhoek opened up an entirely unseen biological world, profoundly transforming scientific understanding of life.
