Heroic Vanguard Leadership and Imperial Companionship
Jean Lannes was a Marshal of the Empire recognized as one of Napoleon’s most daring and dependable field commanders. Emerging as a hero in the 1796 Italian campaign and Egypt, he went on to lead assault columns at Austerlitz, Jena-Auerstedt, Friedland, and in the Peninsular War. Created Duke of Montebello, Lannes maintained a rare, candid friendship with Napoleon, remaining one of the very few confidants permitted to address the Emperor informally. Known for leading from the front lines, Lannes was fatally wounded by a cannonball at the Battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809, becoming the first Marshal of the Empire to be killed in action during the Napoleonic Wars.
