Gustav Struve and Radical Republicanism
Gustav Struve was a German lawyer, political writer, and radical republican leader born in Munich. Alongside Friedrich Hecker, he became a driving force in the 1848 Baden Revolution, demanding the immediate abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a democratic German republic. In September 1848, Struve led a dramatic armed uprising in Lörrach, briefly proclaiming a free republic before being defeated and imprisoned. Following the collapse of the 1849 revolutions, he exiled himself to the United States. In America, he continued his advocacy for social reform, abolitionism, and vegetarianism, while also serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
