Friedrich Hecker and the Baden Uprising
Friedrich Hecker was a charismatic German lawyer, radical democrat, and revolutionary born in Angelbachtal. As a deputy in the Baden parliament, he grew frustrated with moderate reform and chose direct armed action. In April 1848, he launched the famous Hecker Uprising, leading a volunteer militia to march across Baden in a bid to overthrow the monarchy and establish a German republic. Following the revolt's defeat, Hecker emigrated to the United States, settling in Illinois. During the American Civil War, he served as a Union colonel leading German-American regiments, remaining an active advocate for abolitionism and republican principles until his death.
