Ernst Moritz Arndt and German Nationalism
Ernst Moritz Arndt was a German historian, writer, and political thinker born in Garz on the island of Rügen. During the Napoleonic Wars, he became a central voice of early German nationalism, rallying popular resistance against French occupation through patriotic essays, poems, and songs like "Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?". He advocated for the abolition of serfdom and championed German unification based on shared culture and language. Appointed professor of history at Bonn University in 1818, he was soon suspended under the Carlsbad Decrees as a suspected political demagogue. Reinstated years later, he served as a delegate in the 1848 Frankfurt Parliament.
