Anthony Shirley
Anthony Shirley was an English military officer, adventurer, and diplomat born in Sussex. After gaining military experience under Elizabeth I, he traveled to Safavid Persia in 1599 and entered the service of Shah Abbas I. Shirley served as a military advisor and diplomatic envoy, traveling across European courts to negotiate anti-Ottoman military alliances and foster international trade. Though unified European alliances failed to materialize, his diplomatic missions facilitated early modern Eurasian statecraft. He spent his final years in Spain writing political treatises on global geopolitics.
