Reign of Tahmasp I and Safavid Preservation
Shah Tahmasp I, born near Isfahan, was the second Safavid monarch who ruled Iran for over five decades. Ascending the throne as a child, he successfully navigated intense internal court rivalries among the Qizilbash tribes and external threats from the Ottoman Empire and Uzbek forces. Tahmasp moved the capital to Qazvin for military security and negotiated the Peace of Amasya in 1555, securing a period of diplomatic stability. He actively supported Persian art, manuscript illumination, and calligraphy while consolidating royal authority and central administration, ensuring the survival and cultural flourishing of the dynasty through a challenging era of transition.
