Sultan Hossein and the Safavid Collapse

Sultan Hossein, born in Isfahan, was the ninth Safavid monarch whose reign ended in the collapse of effective Safavid rule. Succeeding his father Suleiman I, his administration suffered from severe financial problems, military decline, and growing dependence on Shia clerics. The enforcement of strict religious policies heightened societal tensions among Sufis, Sunnis, and religious minorities. In 1709, a major Afghan rebellion erupted in Kandahar under Mirwais Hotak. Subsequently, Mahmud Hotak led an Afghan army to besiege Isfahan in 1722, forcing Sultan Hossein to surrender and abdicate, which effectively brought an end to over two centuries of Safavid territorial control.
