Pietro della Valle: Italian Traveler and Recorder of the Orient

Pietro della Valle was an Italian nobleman, writer, and traveler who embarked on a twelve-year journey across the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Persia, and India. During his travels, he documented regional geography, languages, customs, and ancient monuments, bringing early cuneiform inscriptions from Babylon and Ur back to Europe. In Baghdad, he married Assyrian Christian Maani Gioia, who accompanied his journeys until her tragic death. His extensive letters, published as *The Pilgrim*, became invaluable historical sources for understanding seventeenth-century Middle Eastern and Indian societies.
