Jean Chardin: French Jeweler and Preeminent Scholar of Persia
Jean Chardin was a French Huguenot jeweler, traveler, and writer who spent years residing in Safavid Persia. Following his father's gem trade, Chardin gained unprecedented access to the court of Shah Abbas II, meticulously recording Persian politics, court rituals, culture, architecture, and economy. Fleeing religious persecution in France, he settled in England, where Charles II knighted him and he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. His multi-volume *Travels of Sir John Chardin* served as a foundational source for European Oriental studies and Enlightenment thought.
