The grenade attacker of the Sarajevo convoy
Nedeljko Čabrinović was a Bosnian Serb printer and political activist involved in the 1914 Sarajevo Incident. As a member of Young Bosnia connected to the Black Hand secret society, he participated in the conspiracy to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand. On June 28, 1914, Čabrinović hurled a bomb at the Archduke's motorcade, but the device bounced off the vehicle and detonated behind it, injuring bystanders while leaving the royal couple unharmed. After failing to commit suicide with cyanide, he was arrested immediately. Found guilty of high treason, his age under twenty-one spared him the death penalty; he was sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment and died of tuberculosis at Theresienstadt in 1916.
