August Bebel: Leader of the German Working Class

August Bebel, born on February 22, 1840, in Cologne, Germany (then Rhine Province, Prussia), was a pivotal social democratic leader and parliamentary strategist. Co-founding the SDAP in 1869, he became the primary figurehead of the SPD, steering the party through decades of state suppression under the Anti-Socialist Laws. Serving in the Reichstag for over forty years, Bebel turned parliamentary politics into a platform for labor advocacy and Marxist education. His influential work, Woman and Socialism, championed gender equality within the labor movement, solidifying his role as one of the most respected popular leaders in European socialist history.
