Robert Blum and the 1848 Revolutions
Robert Blum was a German democratic politician, publisher, and revolutionary orator born in Cologne. Rising from a humble background, he became a leading figure in Saxon liberalism and a prominent left-wing leader in the 1848 Frankfurt National Assembly, advocating for popular sovereignty, gender equality, and opposition to antisemitism. In October 1848, Blum traveled to Vienna to support the local democratic uprising against imperial forces. After the city was recaptured, he was arrested by Austrian authorities. Despite claiming diplomatic immunity as a member of the Frankfurt Parliament, he was summarily executed by firing squad on November 9, 1848, becoming a martyr.
