Lorenz Heister
Lorenz Heister was an eminent German anatomist, surgeon, and professor born in Frankfurt am Main who spearheaded scientific surgical practices in 18th-century Europe. Having studied medicine and anatomy in Leiden under Boerhaave and Ruysch, he served as a battlefield military surgeon during the War of the Spanish Succession. Heister taught at the Universities of Altdorf and Helmstedt, publishing "Chirurgie," a comprehensive surgical textbook translated into numerous languages, and the anatomical guide "Compendium anatomicum." His systematic approaches to surgical techniques and education modernized medical training across Europe and significantly influenced early medical education in Japan via Rangaku.
