Maxime Weygand
General Maxime Weygand was a prominent French military commander who assumed leadership of the Allied forces during the catastrophic German invasion in May 1940. Replacing General Maurice Gamelin, Weygand attempted to establish a defensive line along the Somme, but the French army was quickly overwhelmed. Believing further military resistance was futile, he strongly advocated for an armistice with Germany rather than continuing the war from North Africa. Under the Vichy regime, Weygand served as Minister of Defense and later as Delegate-General in French North Africa, where he cooperated with Vichy while opposing direct German control over the region. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 after Allied forces landed in North Africa, he was imprisoned in Germany until liberation and was later acquitted of collaboration charges post-war.
