Heinrich Brüning and Presidential Decrees
Heinrich Brüning was a prominent politician and economist of the Centre Party who served as Chancellor of Germany from March 1930 to June 1932 during the final crisis of the Weimar Republic. Faced with the catastrophic fallout of the Great Depression, Brüning implemented controversial austerity measures, including strict tax increases and spending cuts. Lacking a parliamentary majority, he pioneered governing through presidential emergency decrees issued by President Paul von Hindenburg, inadvertently eroding the republic's parliamentary norms. Although he attempted to curb the rise of the Nazi Party, his economic policies exacerbated hardship, ultimately paving the way for the collapse of German democracy.
