Robert Gould Shaw’s Legacy

Robert Gould Shaw was a Union Army officer born into a wealthy Boston abolitionist family, known for leading the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. During the Civil War, he took command of a unit composed of black soldiers and was killed in action at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. His courageous actions had a major impact on Northern public opinion, making him a symbol of the expansion of black soldier participation and the ideal of equality.
