John Hay and the Open Door Policy

John Hay served as a secretary in the Lincoln administration and later led American diplomacy during the imperialist era as Secretary of State. He proposed the "Open Door Policy," advocating equal access for major powers to the Chinese market, which had a major impact on the formation of Pacific and Asian strategies. He was also involved in Panama Canal diplomacy and is known as a key diplomat who transformed the United States into a global maritime nation.
