Dean Gooderham Acheson

An influential statesman who directed post-WWII U.S. diplomacy as Secretary of State under the Truman administration. He promoted the formulation of the "Truman Doctrine" and the "Marshall Plan" to counter the Soviet threat and played a decisive role in establishing NATO. While his decisions, such as intervening in the Korean War, defined the foreign intervention stance of the Cold War era, he remained an "architect of the Cold War" who consistently upheld pragmatic internationalism despite enduring intense criticism during the height of McCarthyism.
