Chiang Ching-kuo's Democratic Transition
Chiang Ching-kuo
Chiang Ching-kuo succeeded his father to lead Taiwan's modernization, steering the island through critical economic expansion and monumental political reform. During his tenure as Premier, he heavily promoted the Ten Major Construction Projects, rapidly advancing infrastructure and establishing the island's semiconductor industry. Facing growing international isolation, he prudently advanced the本土化 (benshengren) recruitment strategy to broaden political inclusiveness. Recognizing the irresistible flow of history, he courageously lifted the 38-year martial law in 1987 and abolished party bans, personally terminating authoritarian rule and opening the definitive gateway to democratization.
