Nobusuke Kishi

A former wartime bureaucrat who returned to lead the government, Nobusuke Kishi reshaped Japan's Cold War security architecture. He decisively pushed through the controversial 1960 revision of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty to create an equal bilateral alliance, overcoming massive domestic Anpo protests. Kishi also re-established diplomatic and economic ties with Southeast Asia, laying a durable foundation for Japanese export markets, regional security, and Cold War defense alignment.
