Leopold I and the Defense of Central Europe
Leopold I, born in Vienna on June 9, 1640, reigned as Holy Roman Emperor for nearly nearly five decades from 1658 to 1705. His long rule was defined by major military conflicts, including the Great Turkish War, which saw the relief of the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and the recovery of Hungary, as well as prolonged wars against Louis XIV's France. A devout Catholic and strong supporter of the Counter-Reformation, Leopold was also a passionate patron of the arts, an accomplished composer, and a key figure in establishing Vienna as a vibrant European musical capital.
