John Hancock: Merchant and President of Congress

John Hancock (1737–1793) was a politician and businessman from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and an influential figure who supported the American independence movement. Known as the first person to sign the United States Declaration of Independence with a prominent signature, his signature became an iconic symbol. During the American Revolutionary War, he served as President of the Continental Congress, contributing to colonial unity. After the war, he led politics as Governor of Massachusetts and worked toward the stability of the young nation. His name is still widely recognized today as a word meaning "signature."
